Aileen’s Book Club. A Review of ‘Drive. The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us’ Written by Daniel H. Pink.

Welcome back to Aileen’s Book Club for book review number three!! Ohhh I am on a roll.

So, if I were paid a dollar for every time, I have recommended this book to someone since finishing reading it last week, I would have earned at least $70!  I have not from near memory spoken about the contents of a book so often as I have this book.

Everything we have been taught about economics is pretty much either outdated, bias or simply wrong. The same goes for the way we motivate people, including ourselves. In Daniel’s book, it is a fascinating and scientifically backed tale of what in fact creates and supports human motivation. Now if you are an adult anywhere in the world you surely have heard of the ‘carrot and the stick’ methodology of motivation? If not, I guarantee you have been either an enabler or a victim to it. Maybe victim is too harsh, but you have certainly had it used upon you to wield an outcome that benefited someone other than you.

In essence what Daniel has managed to do is succinctly summarise dozens of 1000 page academic books, papers, thesis and teachings on areas from economics, psychology and anthropology to help us understand the difference between intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. He helps to teach us how the two different motivation modes can be activated to obtain the best outcome for the individual and the community. He uses examples from scientific studies that show us that for all these years we have been dishing out rewards in the form of money, fame and fortune but that in the underbelly of it all, these are scientifically proven to not be the things that ultimately create long lasting happiness and worse of all, they do not even guarantee better work ethics, results or loyalty.

Drive What Motivates Us. Daniel Pink

The writing is small, the words can sometimes be big and yes, you should tackle it at the time of day when your wits are about you but there has since reading this book been so many conversations started around the areas of motivation, purpose and life satisfaction that it would be an injustice to not tell everyone I meet, especially those in business, those in leadership, those in environments of influencing or influencee (think I just made up a word) to read this book (also available in audiobook)!

This book has even helped me understand parenting better, allowing not just our employees the opportunity to find motivation in their life through autonomy and purpose but our children too. They have an innate sense of curiosity that drives them, something we are as adults remarkable at breeding out of them from an early age. Yet it is this curiosity that coupled with autonomy and boundaries allows them to become great thinkers, greater doers and all-round phenomenal humans.

With the landscape of our lives having changed so rapidly and as we slowly head back to some level of normalcy; I would INSIST on anyone in a position to create better humans reads this book. Let us start doing motivation right. Let us learn from those who have bucked the common trends of sticks and carrots and learn what it really means to create DRIVE!
